Holiday Plants That Are Toxic to Pets: Poinsettias, Holly, and Mistletoe

Cat sniffing flowers

Holiday décor brings warmth and cheer—but some festive plants can pose serious dangers to dogs and cats. Before decking the halls, learn which seasonal greens to keep out of paw’s reach and what to do if your pet takes a nibble.

Poinsettias

Poinsettias have a mild toxicity level. Their milky sap can irritate a pet’s mouth and stomach, causing drooling, vomiting, or diarrhea. While rarely life-threatening, ingestion can still cause discomfort  with GI distress.

Holly

Both the leaves and berries of holly contain compounds that can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. The sharp leaves may also injure a pet’s mouth or throat.

Mistletoe

Mistletoe is one of the more dangerous holiday plants. Ingesting it can cause severe gastrointestinal upset, slowed heart rate, and low blood pressure—and large amounts can be toxic to both cats and dogs.

Other Risky Holiday Plants

  • Lilies: Extremely toxic to cats, even minimal exposure can lead to kidney failure.
  • Amaryllis: Contains toxins that can cause vomiting, tremors, and abdominal pain.
  • Pine needles: Sharp and irritating if swallowed, potentially leading to digestive blockages.

Safe Holiday Alternatives

Opt for silk or artificial plants, or choose pet-safe greenery like roses, orchids, or Christmas cactus. When decorating, keep plants well out of reach and sweep up fallen leaves or petals promptly.

What to Do if Your Pet Eats a Toxic Plant

If you suspect ingestion, call your veterinarian or an emergency clinic immediately. You can also contact the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435. Bring a sample or photo of the plant to help your vet identify it quickly.
