Understanding Tick-Borne Illnesses Beyond Lyme Disease

Ticks are more than just a gross nuisance—they’re also a health risk for both pets and people. While most people have heard of Lyme disease, there are several other tick-borne illnesses that can affect your dog or cat. At Partners Animal Hospital Asheville, we believe that the more you know, the better you can protect your pet.
More Than Just Lyme Disease
Here are a few common tick-borne diseases besides Lyme Disease that we see in our region:
- Ehrlichiosis – This infection can cause fever, joint pain, lethargy, and even bleeding disorders if left untreated.
- Anaplasmosis – Symptoms can look a lot like Lyme, including lameness, fever, and loss of appetite.
- Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever – A serious bacterial infection that can lead to swelling, neurological issues, and organ damage if not caught early.
- Babesiosis – This one can destroy red blood cells and lead to anemia.
Each disease affects the body differently, and some pets may show very mild signs—especially in the early stages. This is why checking your pup for ticks after spending time outside is super important along with keeping them up to date on their flea and tick medicine.
Know the Signs
Tick-borne diseases often come with vague symptoms that may be easy to miss at first. Keep an eye out for:
- Tiredness or lack of energy
- Loss of appetite
- Fever
- Stiffness or joint pain
- Changes in behavior
If your pet seems “off” and you know they’ve been outdoors recently where they could have been exposed to ticks, or if you’ve pulled a tick off them recently – it’s always better to check in with us.
Prevention Is the Best Protection
The good news? Tick-borne diseases are preventable. We recommend:
- Year-round flea and tick prevention
- Annual testing for tick-borne diseases—especially for dogs who hike, camp, or spend time in wooded areas
- Checking your pet for ticks after outdoor adventures – especially in warm, moist places such as the armpits, ears, and groin.
If you aren’t sure about what prevention is best for your pet’s lifestyle, we’re happy to help you make a choice. Talk with your vet at your next appointment or give us a call to chat about options.
